EVENT TITLE: PLANADES ATTENDS THE 2024 CLIMATE ACTION IMPLEMENTATION SOUTHEAST ASIA GLOBAL WORKSHOP IN QUEZON CITY


Manila, Philippines, (September 03, 2024) - The Planning and Development Research Foundation, Inc. (PLANADES), represented by its Executive Director, Dr. Tabassam Raza, attended the second day of the 2024 Climate Action Implementation Southeast Asia Global Workshop held last September 3, 2024 in Quezon City.

Quezon City Mayor, Joy Belmonte, provided the opening remarks for the workshop. Mayor Belmonte discussed Quezon City’s progress in the implementation of ICA into their climate governance through the development of good green jobs and other measures. This program is in line with the C40 World Mayors Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2022 participated by the Mayor, which called for the creation of 50 million good green jobs by 2050.

Freetown Mayor and C40 Cities Co-Chair, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, also delivered a speech on the struggles of the city with the Ebola virus outbreak and climate change-related issues such as the rapid city congestion and deforestation.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr mentioned several measures adapted by the city government to address these issues which included improved sanitation systems and mass tree plantation projects. At the end of the speech, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr called for a more localized ICA and climate response to effectively address the impacts of climate change.

The week-long workshop, which is part of the Climate Action Implementation (CAI) Programme, provided a venue for city leaders and representatives from three participating cities- Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Quezon City to joined together and discuss their perspectives, experiences, insights, and proposals to effectively adapt and mainstream Inclusive Climate Action (ICA) into their respective cities’ policies and climate governance. The event was hosted by the Quezon City Government and funded by the UK Government’s Urban Climate Action Programme (UCAP).
