EVENT TITLE: PLANADES AND QUEZON CITY REPRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ADDRESSING WEATHER EXTREMES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA HELD AT CURTIN UNIVERSITY, PERTH, AUSTRALIA
On May 27, 2024, delegates from the Philippines, including Prof. Dr. Tabassam Raza, Executive Director of PLANADES and Project Country Chief Investigator of the Research Project, attended the International Symposium on Addressing Weather Extremes in Southeast Asian Cities at Curtin University. Representing Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte were Ms. Andrea Valentine Villaroman and Ms. Vanessa Claire Vinarao from the Quezon City Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department (CCESD).

Held at The Bankwest Lecture Theatre, Curtin University, Perth, Australia, the symposium marked the culmination of a two-year project funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) initiative. The project, titled “Are City Climate Plans Adequate for Mitigating Weather Extremes? An Investigation of Southeast Asian Cities,” aimed to enhance urban resilience through nature-based solutions and strengthen regional cooperation. The event was honored by the presence of Hon. Recce Whitby, MLA, as the Chief Guest of the symposium.

A key highlight of the symposium was the presentation of findings from Quezon City by Prof. Dr. Raza Project Country Chief Investigator and Ms. Villaroman, as one of the project's country partners. They also participated in a panel discussion with other Southeast Asian city representatives, including Mayors and Community Leaders, as well as Project Chief Investigators. This discussion centered on climate mitigation and adaptation strategies, facilitating valuable exchanges on addressing climate challenges.
