EVENT TITLE: PLANADES and UP SURP organized a side event during UNDRR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025) in Switzerland.
June 06, 2025 - Planning and Development Research Foundation Inc. (PLANADES), Philippines and School of Urban and Regional Planning, University of the Philippines (UP SURP), led organizing with other partners including the City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department, UET Lahore, Pakistan; School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Curtin University, Australia; TU Dortmund, Germany; and Disaster Preparedness Mitigation and Management (DPMM) Program, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, a side event during the UNDRR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025) in Switzerland.
The event was highly successful and well-attended; indeed, it convened a distinguished cross-section of policymakers, experts, practitioners, and representatives from civil society and international organizations, highlighting Nation’s strategic leadership in advancing the global DRR agenda.
With the theme centered on “Best Tools and Practices in Accelerating Disaster Risk Reduction Urgency through Local Physical and Development Planning in Changing Climate”, the session served as a dynamic platform to present cutting-edge solutions, share good practices, and foster meaningful dialogue on multi-stakeholder collaboration, innovation, and locally led action. The side event featured insightful interventions, forward-looking policy recommendations, and case-based learnings that contributed directly to the GP2025 outcomes using three (3) projects and two (2) proposals accomplished by PLANADES. The three projects include Linking Disaster Risk Governance and Land Use Planning: The Case of Informal Settlements in Hazard Prone Areas in the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam; Are City Climate Plans Adequate for Mitigating Weather Extremes? An Investigation of Southeast Asian Cities: Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia; and Planning in Germany and Pakistan: Responding Challenges of Climate Change through Intercultural Dialogue.
In addition, a hybrid workshop explored resilience in informal settlements with an objective to co-develop transferable resilience strategies with planning implications. The output of the workshop was a menu of strategies under four themes: Standards & Livelihood, Housing, Building Codes, and Site Re-blocking, with 28 inputs from six countries i.e., Bangladesh, Germany, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, and Zimbabwe.
Indeed, PALANADES ’s successful organizing and delivering of this session reaffirmed its commitment to shaping resilient futures and its role as a thought leader and catalyst for Risk Sensitive (DRR and Climate Change) Development and Land use Planning practices and actions on the global stage.
